World Oceans Day 2025: Reflecting on a Year of Science, Collaboration and Impact
This World Oceans Day, we’re celebrating a year of global connection — through fresh publications, cross-disciplinary collaborations, a major MegaMove milestone, and the launch of the new Lab website.

This World Oceans Day, we take a moment to look back on the strides made over the past 12 months — a year marked by powerful collaborations, global engagement, and research that supports real-world ocean conservation.
Since last World Oceans Day, the Sequeira Lab has continued to grow its international footprint and deepen its scientific impact. Over the past year alone, we have had a range of papers published — covering everything from collaborative conservation frameworks to climate-driven species redistribution, to DNA metabarcoding and novel tools for tracking marine megafauna. Our most recent release is the MegaMove paper, which marks a major milestone in global marine megafauna research.
This research has been grounded in collaboration — involving co-authors from all over the world — and a shared vision of protecting ocean biodiversity through science-based action.
From field deployments and international symposiums, to co-developing tools for global sustainability frameworks, our team has been at the forefront of conversations about the future of our oceans.
We are grateful to the collaborators, Traditional Owners, students, and partner institutions who have made this work possible. And as we look ahead, we remain committed to building a more connected, data-informed, and collaborative future for ocean conservation.
Happy World Oceans Day from all of us at the Sequeira Lab and thank you for being part of this journey 🌊
