Student opportunities
There are several ways to undertake research with the Sequeira Lab. The pathway depends on your degree and whether you are already enrolled at ANU.
Research projects and Honours
We welcome enquiries from students interested in completing a research project or Honours research with the lab.
If you are interested, contact us with:
- a short CV
- your current degree and institution
- your research interests
- any relevant research, quantitative or programming experience
- when you would like to undertake the project
Projects can often be developed around both the lab's current research and a student's interests.
Students considering Honours should first review the ANU Research School of Biology Honours information, which explains eligibility, application timing and the process for finding a supervisor. You can also browse the current RSB research projects, although potential projects with our lab are not limited to those listed there.
Masters projects
To undertake a Masters research project with the Sequeira Lab, you must first be enrolled in an appropriate Masters program at ANU.
Once enrolled, you are welcome to contact us to discuss possible research projects and supervision.
Students interested in postgraduate biology can review the ANU Master of Science in Biological Sciences and other relevant ANU programs before contacting the lab.
PhD opportunities
We welcome enquiries from prospective PhD students whose interests align with the lab's research. Before applying, please review the ANU postgraduate research application process, including information on finding a supervisor, preparing a research proposal and submitting an application.
Domestic applicants
We are always keen to hear from domestic students interested in undertaking a PhD with the lab, including when a specific PhD project is not being advertised.
Please contact us with a short CV, your academic background and a brief description of the research area you are interested in pursuing.
ANU scholarship application timelines differ between domestic and international applicants. Please check the current ANU research degree scholarship rounds when planning your application.
International applicants
PhD scholarships at ANU are highly competitive for international applicants. Strong candidates will generally have an excellent academic record and at least one peer-reviewed publication.
We do not currently have a funded international PhD vacancy. However, suitable candidates are welcome to stay in touch about future opportunities.
If you would like to be considered, please send:
- A CV of no more than two pages.
- A statement of no more than one page outlining:
- the research you would like to pursue during your PhD
- how you could contribute to the Sequeira Lab
- why you are interested in joining the lab and how working with us would support your research goals
- Your academic transcript and GPA. If useful, refer to the ANU GPA information and calculation method.

Visiting researchers and postdoctoral researchers
We welcome enquiries from researchers interested in visiting the Sequeira Lab or developing a research collaboration with us.
This may include short research visits, visiting postdoctoral researchers, or researchers interested in developing externally funded fellowship or collaboration opportunities with the lab.
Please contact us with a brief description of your research, the purpose of the proposed visit or collaboration, and your preferred timing.
Internships, volunteering and research experience
We also welcome enquiries from people looking to gain research experience or contribute specific skills to our projects.
Our needs vary between projects, but useful skills often include:
- GIS and spatial analysis
- R programming and data analysis
- scientific and technical writing
- preparation of research documentation, including ethics applications and permits
- Adobe Illustrator and scientific graphics
- social media and science communication
- policy briefing and regulatory guidance

What should I plan for an unpaid visit or placement?
To help make your time with us a positive experience, please plan to cover your travel, accommodation and day-to-day living costs, and arrange suitable health insurance for your stay. Support may come from your own funds, a scholarship or your home institution. Please include a brief note about your proposed funding arrangements when you contact us, so we can discuss what is practical together.
