A productive 3-month research visit in Germany by our PhD student Nils Kreuter
PhD student Nils Kreuter has just returned from his three-month visit to the Helmholtz Information and Data Science Academy in Germany!

Sequeira Lab‘s PhD student Nils Kreuter was awarded a Helmholtz Visiting Researcher Grant from the Helmholtz Information & Data Science Academy (HIDA) in Germany to visit the institute. This grant provided Nils with the invaluable opportunity to spend three months working with the Marine Behavioural Ecology Group, led by Dr. Christopher Monk, at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research in Kiel.
During his time at GEOMAR, Nils learned about data visualisation techniques and began to code a JavaScript application specifically for visualising acoustic telemetry data. In addition to his coding work, Nils joined Dr. Monk’s team on a one-day field trip, to sample cod in the Baltic Sea. This hands-on experience contributed to ongoing research focusing on estimating the growth patterns of fish species, an essential element for managing fish stocks and ensuring the long-term health of marine ecosystems.
We would like to thank the HIDA for making this unique opportunity possible, and Dr. Christopher Monk and his entire team at GEOMAR for their warm welcome, hospitality and mentorship!
