Oliver has joined the Sequeira Lab from the Harry Butler Institute, Murdoch University, where he has recently submitted his PhD thesis for examination. Oliver specialises in the tagging and tracking of marine megafauna, particularly large sharks. His recent work involved the collection and analysis of high-resolution bio-logging data from the movements of white sharks across the world. Oliver used animal-borne tri-axial accelerometers, magnetometers, gyroscopes, depth sensors and cameras to determine how white sharks used their foraging seascapes across different areas, regions and times of the day. During his PhD, he spent time in the field in South Africa and California, working with the Dyer Island Conservation Trust and Monterey Bay Aquarium, respectively. He has also spent time working with the Department of Fisheries, Western Australia.
He will now focus his research on megafauna movements at the World Heritage-listed Shark Bay, Western Australia, where the Sequeira Lab runs the Gathaagudu Animal Tracking (GAT) Project. He will work closely with Lab members Mike and Ben and our collaborators from traditional owner groups and the Departments of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) and Fisheries, Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD).
