As we look back at the year just finishing, we are thrilled to share some of the highlights and achievements of the Lab!
Field trips are always at the top of the highlights, and we were lucky to have three of them this year! Each trip focused on the capture and satellite tagging of different species in Shark Bay, Western Australia! They included tagging marine mammals (see our recent dugong post), reptiles (see our turtle post here), and also sharks (focused on tiger sharks)! The tiger shark trip was definitely one of the greatest highlights and we are sharing our trip video below! During this trip, the SequeiraLab also deployed the first acoustic receiver array in the bay!
This year, we were all excited to welcome FOUR new members to our lab: Dr Dahlia Foo as a Postdoctoral Fellow, Jaiden Lane as an Honours student, Linbin as a PhB (undergrad) student, and Priscilla Seah as the Lab’s very first Communications Assistant! We also saw three of our PhD students handing in their PhD thesis (congratulations to Mike Taylor, Ben D'Antonio and Michelle VanCompernolle)!
We travelled across the world to attend conferences in Japan, Germany, and Perth, to participate in meetings in Indonesia, Kioloa, and Western Australia, to embark on a teaching trip to China, and to develop new collaborations (including a three months research visit for our PhD student Nils Kreuter)!
We have seen our lab lead Associate Professor Ana Sequeira being awarded the very prestigious Fenner Medal from the Australian Academy of Science, and several scientific papers being published! You can see some of these here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here. We also found time to do some great social and outreaching events with our team members, the wider community and some of our visitors to the lab!
Overall, it was an incredibly productive year! And such success can only be achieved with a great team, great collaborations, great support, and a lot of work! For this reason, the Sequeira Lab would like to thank everyone who support us along the way. And this year, our special shoutout goes to:
- Prof Charlie Huveneers, Dr Chris Cleguer and our Malgana friends and collaborators, for their assistance and support in our Shark Bay field work;
- Dr Jorge Rodriguez, Dr Nuno Queiroz, and Dr Sarah Marley for all their hard work with the MegaMove project; and
- Dr Hannah Calich and Olga M. Azevedo, for going above and beyond in all SequeiraLab activities!
A big thanks is also due to the Australian National University, and the University of Western Australia Oceans Institute, as well as all of our philanthropic funders, including the Jock Clough Marine Foundation, and the Pew Charitable Trusts.
We wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season, and we’ll see you in 2025!
