The President of the Republic of Portugal congratulated Ana Sequeira for her research journey
Our lab leader, Associate Professor Ana Sequeira, has been congratulated by His Excellency António José Seguro, the President of the Republic of Portugal for her research achievements. This diplomatic acknowledgement followed Ana’s recent recognition by the Frontiers Planet Prize for her globally significant scientific contributions. The President also highlighted Ana has an example of the talent and excellence of the Portuguese diaspora, whose members continue to make meaningful contributions to the advancement of science and knowledge worldwide. he also acknowledged Ana's career path as underscoring the increasing importance of women in science and technology, whose contributions are essential to fostering a more inclusive, innovative, and competitive society.
This acknowledgement of Ana took place on the recent International Biodiversity Day (22 May 2026). The International Biodiversity Day focuses on the theme “Acting locally for global impact”, reminding us that big changes often start with small, local-scale actions. In Ana’s work, she has collaborated with scientists from around the world who collectively monitored more than 15,000 marine animals throughout three decades. The resulting study is a groundbreaking compilation of the largest global tracking dataset of marine megafauna to reveal how these animals use the global ocean space.
As recognised from the Frontiers Planet Prize, this work advances understanding of Earth systems and offers solutions for global policy. The acknowledgement of Ana’s work demonstrates the Sequeira Lab’s global influence, policy significance, and contribution to global initiatives to protect the ocean.
Congratulations to Ana for receiving this diplomatic acknowledgement from the President of the Republic of Portugal and for being recognised as an example of great talent and excellence of the Portuguese people around the globe!
